On July 4, 2001, WMGK's first "Let Freedom Rock Fest" was held at Cooper River Park in Pennsauken. The headliner was AMERICA (see photo: America with the WMGK staff, including myself, Debbi Calton, and Jim Kinney. Gerry Beckley & Dewey Bunnell are in the middle, dressed in black).
Being a longtime fan of America, I was very sad to hear that original member Dan Peek had passed away on July 24th. Dan left the group in 1977, so he wasn't present at WMGK's Let Freedom Rock Fest that day..... but his songs have remained a part of America's set lists each and every night they perform. It was Dan who penned (and sang lead vocals on) the hits "Lonely People," "Don't Cross The River," and "Woman Tonight." I have a lot of respect for Dan, as well as the other members of America.
After leaving America in 1977, Dan recorded Christian pop, including the successful solo album "All Things Are Possible," released in 1979. His other albums of religious music include "Electro Voice," "Cross Over," and "Caribbean Christmas" (he & his wife lived in the Cayman Islands for many years).
Dan Peek is survived by his wife Catherine, and five siblings; Tom, Deborah, Rebecca, David, and Angela.
This is for all the lonely people
Thinking that life has passed them by
Don't give up until you drink from the silver cup
And ride that highway in the sky
RIP Dan Peek....
