Double Nickel Brewing's Head Brewer Drew Perry believes that the qualities that define great beer aren’t measured by the length of the ingredient list, but how your put your modern take on a classic style.

You won't find him chasing trends or following the market.  He'll stick to consistently brewing uncompromising great beers that will stand on their own through the test of time and that's perfectly fine with us.You'll find Double Nickel Brewing Company at our upcoming MGK Locals Only Beer Festival on April 22 at Independence Seaport Museum.  Tickets are on sale now and selling fast.

We'll be highlighting each brewery participating in our event on with our Locals Only Spotlight feature.  You'll get a feel for what drives them to make delicious craft beer and most importantly what tasty offerings they'll be serving up on April 22.

What They're Serving

Each brewer will serve up a Flagship beer (a beer they're well known for) & a Specialty/reserve beer.  Attendees will get to vote for their favorite beer in each category.

Flagship Beer Category - Vienna Lager
In the early stages of starting our brewery there was a whole lot of unknowns. One thing that we did know however, was that we wanted to focus on making beer styles that we all personally loved to drink and would want to share with a friend. Beers which we felt had not been brewed justice by any of the existing local breweries. Our Vienna Lager is definitely one of those beers. We kept our recipe pretty traditional to the Vienna style which resulted in a bready backbone that is perfectly balanced by noble hops. The Vienna Lager has been one of our best-selling beers and is part of our Core Series for which we like to simply name by their given style.

Specialty Beer Category - Buffalo Nickel - 8% ABV
Buffalo Nickel is an 8% abv Stout that we aged in Bourbon Barrels for 6 months. The result is a beautiful marriage of the two: roasted malt and dark chocolate with some soft yeasty fruitiness (red berries, apple and pear) all with a faint taste of caramel that is finished with a relatively subtle nudge of bourbon. The levels of complexities you get from barrel aging are showcased brilliantly with the robustness of this stout and provide for a real smooth experience. The name sake of our brewery, The Double Nickel Bridge (Tacony Palmyra), actually cost 2 nickels back when the Buffalo Nickel was in US currency circulation, so we knew we wanted to use this name for a beer that was truly special and had a lot of depth.

When we think of Double Nickel, we don't think of us as just another home grown brewery. Our brewery and the history behind it is comprised of multiple generations of people from many backgrounds. We have come together over our love of great craft beer to celebrate our uniquely diverse beer culture. In doing so, we are filling a void we felt was left vacant in our region. Our many walks of life are what inspires us, and is also what makes us unique. We felt that somewhere along the way start up breweries lost sight of what really makes a world class brewing company. To us, crafting great beer is not about chasing trends or following the market.

From The Packing Line To Owning Your Own Brewery

Drew Perry, our Co-founder/Head Brewer, has more than 10 years of experience in the industry. He started off on the packaging line and worked his way up to being the Brewery Manager of NJ’s largest brewery, Flying Fish. From there he went on to help start a contract brewery in Virginia which he left after 3 years to move back home and start Double Nickel. His self-proclaimed style is “no-nonsense”. To him, less is more.
