PROFILE: SJC Custom Drums

The best success stories come from the humblest of beginnings.  That considered, the evolution of SJC Custom Drums is truly something to behold.

Founded in 2000 by brothers Mike and Scott J. Ciprari, SJC Custom Drums got its start creating and assembling kits in their grandmother’s basement.  (Their childhood basement was where they stored various drum parts.)

Oh, and they were only 13 and 14 at the time. Just let that sink in for a bit.

In just 16 years, SJC has moved into a proper warehouse, employs nearly 20 people and are the drums of choice for a number of rock’s most popular drummers including Slipknot’s Jay Weinberg, Twenty One Pilots’ Josh Dun and Green Day’s Tre Cool.

“Having Tre on board as one of SJC’s artists has been one of the biggest milestones in my life,” said Mike Ciprari.  “When I was 15, Tre was my favorite drummer.  Dookie was the first CD I ever bought.”

Company culture is very important to SJC, and it’s clearly why the small drum company has been able to attract so many big names.

“This company is a family, and we treat our artists like family,” said Ciprari.  “We were naïve about business in the beginning.  Really, we never set out to be a business.  We just wanted to make cool looking drums…We’re still very DIY and grassroots.  Add that to the fact that we make time for every artist we meet, that’s what sets us apart from our larger competitors.”

Well…that and SJC’s Virtual Kit Designer.

Originally launched in 2007, SJC spent a number of years tweaking their online tool where customers can design their dream kits.  At first, there were actually too many options, which made for a difficult turn-around in production, but the Virtual Kit Designer was relaunched this year, with a reduced, but still diverse set of options.  As of right now, turn-around time from order to delivery is eight weeks, but Ciprari said that the company’s new goal is aiming at four weeks.
