5 Comic Books To Sink Your Teeth Into For National Comic Book Day

Now, by all means, I'm no expert when it comes to comics, so first thing's first, these are opinions.

Luckily, I live with a comic book hoarder, who also does podcasts on all things nerd-related, and works at a comic book store, so I was able to get some expert opinions on where to start. Check out the 5 that were settled on after wracking our brains on some of the best comics in the biz.

The Defenders - Brian Michael Bendis (Author), David Marquez (Illustrator)

The popularity of the Netflix series The Defenders puts the spotlight on the comic version and the current run of The Defenders authored by Brian Michael Bendis has been killing it as of late when it comes to comic stories. He is also currently writing Iron Man and the Miles Morales version of Spider-Man, as well as Jessica Jones.

Transformers: Lost Light - James Roberts (Author), Jack Lawrence (Illustrator)

Transformers is always a safe play if you're looking for a comic, and with the popularity of Transformers as a movie, wouldn't you want to know more? The current run kicks off with the Transformers looking for Cyberutopia, and according to the description on Amazon, "They've misplaced their map. They've lost their ship, the Lost Light, to a mutinous escapologist. Oh, and they're dead." Sounds enticing to me!

Batman: The War Of Jokes And Riddles - Tom King (Author), Mikel Janin (Illustrator)

@9393_939_39 We won't spoil it but the origin of "Hell yeah" can be found in The War of Jokes and Riddles #27's a bit of a gut punch

In the current series of Batman "Rebirth," The War Of Jokes And Riddles" pits The Joker against The Riddler in a war, and Batman is in the middle trying to figure out how to stop it. Considering that The Riddler and The Joker are reigning kings of being some of the most popular Batman villains, it's written to the letter very well (I know, this one I've actually read), and keeps you guessing with every issue.

Saga - Brian K. Vaughan (Author), Fiona Staples (Illustrator)

Where it all started! Thanks to Mr. Vaughan and Mrs. Staples for making this masterpiece. Volume 1 has to be one of the best comics ever made. Magnificent writing and beautiful art with amazing characters and set up universe makes this volume a joy to read. What were your favorite parts? :3 #saga #sagacomic #imagecomics #comics #space

Two soldiers who fall in love, they create  a child and bring it into "a dangerous, old universe." With writing from the author of Ex Machina, you know this is both going to be good, and only for adults. It's also snagged multiple awards like 2013's Hugo Award for Best Graphic Story, as well as toppled the competition of top graphic novels for  NYT, IGN, the Examiner, and SF Weekly.

Sex Criminals - Matt Fraction (Author), Chip Zdarsky (Illustrator)

Thanks @0shetalkstorainbows0 for these spicy graphic novels ???????? I'll definitely read them over the weekend! #bookstagram #graphicnovel #sexcriminals #sexcriminalscomic #iminnocentiswear #comicbooks

Clearly for adults, Matt Fraction's 'Sex Criminals' is about a chick named Suzie who has a very strange superpower: When she has sex, she stops time. So when she meets a guy named Jon who's got the same ability, they turn it into a life of crime. If that sounds too tawdry for your sensibilities, you can always dive into Matt Fraction's version of 'Hawkeye,' - yes, the Marvel Avengers guy, who is a lot more of a catastrophe than Clint Barton in the MCU Movies.

Though you can pick these books up on sites like Amazon, this is a moment we encourage for you to visit your local comic book store. Not only do you get to leaf through and see what is going to be the best pick for you, but most comic book stores are independently owned and operated, which means you're supporting local business.
