Sammy Hagar Talks New Concert Film, Career Goals
Believe it or not, but Sammy Hagar turned 70 this year, and as with birthday’s past, he threw a big party at his Cabo Wabo Cantina in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.
One thing that did change, however, is that Hagar had the whole event filmed. The result? The new concert film Red Til I’m Dead, which is hitting select theaters nationwide for one-night-only on December 5.
So, what led to chronicling this multi-day birthday extravaganza? Hagar told WRIF’s Meltdown the excitement around the event was a big reason:
“The Cabo Wabo Cantina only holds about 6-700 people. We sell 500 tickets every year for four nights, so we sell 2,000 tickets. This year, there were 100,000 people in the lottery trying to get tickets…Long story short, I thought, ‘We gotta film this thing while I’m still doing it and still having so much fun doing it so the fans can see it.’ It’s really a shame, and I felt terrible, [because] thousands of people were out in front [of Cabo Wabo Cantina] this year that couldn’t get in. Every single night [there] were thousands sleeping on the sidewalk, hanging around in the parking lot just trying to get in…It’s really got that intense, so everyone gets to see it, and it’s awesome!”
Naturally, when you’re someone like Hagar and you’ve just celebrated your 70th in epic fashion, it’s hard to think there’s anything else on his career to-do list, but the Red Rocker is eyeing one lofty goal:
“I want to be the oldest living rock star on the planet one day…Everyday you see somebody else going…I’m going to preserve myself, maybe put the brakes on a little bit, eat right, keep myself healthy, keep exercising…and I’m serious! I would love to be the oldest living rock star on Earth someday.”
If anyone can reach that goal, it’s Sammy Hagar.
