Jim Nabors, who’s best known for playing Gomer Pyle on The Andy Griffith Show and the spin-off Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C, has died at the age of 87.

Nabors’ death was confirmed by his partner and husband of 40 years to WTHR in Indianapolis.

Nabors shot to fame as Gomer Pyle, who first appeared on The Andy Griffith Show in 1962 during the show’s third season. The character was only meant to appear in one episode, but the country sweet mechanic caught on in popularity that led to the Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C. spinoff, which lasted from 1964-1969.

Nabors, of course, was also an accomplished singer who netted three gold albums per the RIAA and was a fixture of the Indianapolis 500 where he would sing “Back Home Again In Indiana.”
