David Bowie’s First ‘Starman’ Demo Up for Auction
You never know what you’ll find when cleaning out your attic.
At the age of 16 Kevin Hutchinson was given a reel-t0-reel tape including unheard demos of “Starman”, “Moonage Daydream”, and Hang on to Yourself”, which all appeared on Bowie’s 1972 album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars.
Given to him by his friend Mick Ronson, Hutchinson told BBC he only listened to it once before putting the box in storage, until two years ago when he found the tape.
The total length of the recording is approximately 44 minutes.
The auction closes on Tuesday, March 12 and is expected to sell at at least £10,000 and can be viewed here.
