Warner Bros. has announced Wonka, a prequel film about the classic Willy Wonka character, is set for release in 2023.
Per The Hollywood Reporter, the film will chronicle the story of Willy Wonka before the opening of his chocolate factory.
Currently slated to hit theaters on March 17, 2023, Wonka will be helmed by director Paul King, best known for the Paddington films, and producer David Heyman, who has a number of high-profile credits to his name including the entire Harry Potter film series.
Casting details are not currently known, but Wonka was famously portrayed by Gene Wilder in the 1971 film Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory and infamously portrayed by Johnny Depp in the 2005 Tim Burton adaptation.
The Wonka character, of course, was created by author Roald Dahl whose Wonka books include 1964’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and 1972’s Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator.
