It’s a really exciting time to be a Philadelphia sports fan. When the teams are going good there is a different energy here. You can feel it each day. We’re all pulling in the same direction, nobody is questioning each other because of what they believe or any other nonsense that you might find on social media.
Now as one group of a few million people, there is a man who we can turn our ire towards for the next week and a half. This is a man, who for all I know may be ‘doing good work in the community’. He probably is. I don’t know. I don’t care. He runs an empire of furniture stores in Texas. His name is Jim McIngvale, better know as “Mattress Mack”. The furniture business must be booming because over the last handful of years he has been placing massive bets on different major sporting events. Jim’s first bet to get national attention was when he placed a $13 million dollar bet on the Astros to win the 2019 World Series. He’s also placed millions on the Kentucky Derby, NCAA Football National Championship games, etc. When placing these bets he also has some sort of store promotion going on, so I guess he knows what he’s doing.
Now Mattress Mack is on the verge of a massive win if the Astros win the World Series. He has a handful of bets placed for an Astros World Series win including a $3 million bet on the Astros to win when their number was +1100, and another bet of $2 million when the odds were cut in half at +553. Overall the bets would pay out $75 million for Mack. He is now officially our enemy. He doesn’t need this $75 million. WE need this. This city is a much better place when our sports teams are on fire. If you needed another reason to root for the Phillies (what’s your problem), you’ve just been handed 75 million more of them.
Good thing is Mattress Mack doesn’t have a great record of betting success. He’s 2-13 when it comes to massive bets placed, losing around $23 million. Must be nice. Here’s to hoping Red October and soon to be Red November drives that losing number even higher.
