Thunder Road is almost 50 years old. It seems like it took 45 years for this question to even come up, and another 2 years to actually get an answer from the man himself. There was an internet battle to figure out what is the correct word in the first line of Bruce’s Thunder Road. The screen door slams, Mary’s dress ______. Some people were saying it waves, while others are say it sways. Bruce put that to rest on Monday night when he was on the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. So it seems all these years both parties can claim their correct, and show some sort of proof, because Bruce has sung the song with ‘sways’ in concerts, but the lyrics on the album say waves.
