The Philadelphia Wings’ Home Opener Tomorrow!
Lacrosse is back in Philadelphia tomorrow!
The Philadelphia Wings are set to start their 2023 home campaign tomorrow as they take on Panther City down at the Wells Fargo Center at 7 p.m. on Saturday, January 14th.
So far this season, the team has a 2-1 record with wins over the Georgia Swarm and Las Vegas Desert Dogs.
The Wings are coming off of a 2022 season where they finished the year 9-9, which was good for fifth place in the East Division of the National Lacrosse League and a playoff berth.
The team went on to lose a tough-fought game against the San Diego Seals in the playoffs by a score of 9-8.
This year, the team seeks to build on their success from last season by finishing in the upper echelon of the East Division and also making a deep run into the postseason, and potentially bringing another championship to the city.
Funny enough, I actually got my start as a public address announcer for the Wings back in the 90s!
I was with the team from 1993 all the way through 1998!
I was fortunate to be a part of three championship runs while I was with the team as the Wings won the National Lacrosse League Cup in back-to-back years in 1994 and 1995, and then won a few years after that in 1998!
Back then the trophy was actually called the Champion’s Cup!
You can see me posing with it in the picture above!
That photo was taken back in 1995 at Maui Nightclub on Delaware Avenue at the team’s celebration party.
With me in the picture is former Wings’ great, Gary Martin, who was also an amazing player at Penn State University – he was so good there, he was elected as an All-American.
And for those wondering why my knee is in a brace in that picture, no, the Wings did not throw me into a game unannounced!
I actually hurt it outside of work, but I did not miss a single game, in fact!
Some current Wings players were actually at the 76ers game last night, including Trevor Baptiste, Matt Rambo, Blaze Riorden, and Ben McIntosh!
They were getting the fans going by tossing some t-shirts into the crowd during one of the intermissions in the second quarter!
It was a lot of fun!
As I am sure this Wings season will be for all involved, so try your best to get down to the WFC for a game or two!
It is always a great time.
