If you’re not getting enough sleep lately, it might not be your fault. It could be because you live in a certain Pennsylvania city that’s ranked the worst for sleep health in America.
Not getting enough sleep, of course, can be really detrimental to one’s health. It doesn’t take a doctor to tell that missing a night of sleep can result in a very uncomfortable next day. I personally hate the feeling of insomnia, because I know that I’ll be super groggy the next day.
U.S. News and World Report recently published a story on the worst cities for sleep health in America. “Poor sleep can mean not getting enough sleep consistently,” they state in the study. “The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines recommend adults ages 18 to 60 get seven hours or more of sleep per night.” They add that not getting enough shuteye “can lead to heart disease, cancer, diabetes, or any number of physical and mental health ailments. Sleeping on a comfortable mattress and following a healthy bedtime routine helps, but your sleep quality can depend on where you live.”
The factors they considered in this report include air pollution, light pollution, noise pollution, physical activity and short sleep duration.
The absolute worst city in the US for sleep health was, drum roll, Philadelphia. The study notes that in general, “You’re less likely to get a good night’s sleep in the eastern part of the U.S. In the bottom half of the survey, you’ll find 15 of the 24 cities listed are much older – and much more interconnected than the western side of the country – and fare worse with all types of pollution.” Find the full study here.
