Facts About The Masters From Matt Cord and Beasley Philadelphia
A Tradition Unlike Any Other
It is officially my favorite time of year!
The weather is changing for the better and finally starting to heat up a bit.
The summer is quickly approaching.
The Philadelphia 76ers are inching closer to the playoffs.
And the leaves on the trees are starting to turn green!
But nothing on earth may be as green as the grass down at Augusta National Golf Club — the cathedral of green grass and the home of The Masters.
This golf tournament also plays a huge part in this being my favorite time of year!
Besides the tournament being an exhibit of great golf for four days straight, the golf course itself is just simply gorgeous and a pleasure to watch.
The grass is pristine, the pine trees are perfect, the flowers are beautiful, and the birds chirping is music to my ears!
It really is a tradition like any other.
Plus, the club itself has its traditions that make this tournament unlike any other.
I actually learned about a few of their traditions from my good friend, Kevin Gunn.
More commonly known as Gunner around the studios!
He is the voice of many of the commercials on a number of our stations and does a lot of imagery for WMMR. He has actually been here longer than Pierre Robert, believe it or not!
He has been to The Masters twice, so he knows a thing or two about their traditions.
For example, the caddies all wear white jumpsuits, the winners’ dinner on Tuesday night, and the par 3 tournament that takes place today!
Also, the broadcast on television is very different from other golf tournaments.
There are very limited commercials and when there are commercials, they are strictly official Masters sponsors only. Plus, there are no “coming up next on ESPN” type of ads.
The sole focus is the golf at hand, which is refreshing.
The food and beer menu is also not your regular concession stand items.
The prize money is not published in the paper the next day like every other tournament.
And, of course, the coveted green jacket the winner gets every year placed on them by the previous winner from the year before.
Altogether, it is an awesome event.
Gunner is not the only person in the building to have gone to The Masters, Steve Vassalotti from The John DeBella Show, has also attended the tournament!
As recently as last year, in fact!
He recently posted an article on WMGK which I will link here, that lists the top five spots to watch the tournament on the course.
All those spots look unreal on TV, I can’t imagine what it looks like in person!
But for this year, the TV will have to do again, and that is more than all right!
I can’t wait to watch it!
Who do you guys think will win?
Let me know!
