The Philadelphia area has passed down tall tales about Satanville for as long as anyone can remember.

According to urban legend, it’s a spooky and dooming location off Route 1 in the Chadds Ford area close to the Delaware border.

Satanville

Delaware County is an interesting place to begin with. However, the (supposed) spooky destination is a little too obscure even for a county notoriously known as Delco.

Like with any urban legend, a story will differ depending on the person who is telling it. Some say Satanville is a place where castoffs of the du Pont family moved to perform unspeakable acts that would disgrace the family name.

Others say it’s a cult location for Satanic rituals and hate groups. People even say that a white SUV chases all vehicles that enter within close proximity of the forbidden road that leads to Satanville.

Pretty much all stories passed by word of mouth and online recollections include some variation of a long, windy road off Route 1 surrounded by eerie trees. There’s a real Sleepy Hollow tone to the oral history.

Most of the stories conveniently take place at night within a week or two of Halloween. They sound kind of like a movie you watched on the Disney Channel about 20 years ago.

Is This Actually True?

Chadds Ford is the perfect remote location for teenagers from the heart of Delco to venture on a Friday night looking for a spooky ghost story.

Ask your neighbor who grew up close to the area. He’ll probably tell you a story about getting chased back to Route 1 with his buddies in the glory days.

It shouldn’t come as a surprise that the du Ponts made their way into these stories. They’re the wealthiest and most famous family in the area, and some individual members of the family have a checkered past of ugly events. It's a very convenient story element.

An urban legend about a place called Satanville will naturally attract some people with a fascination for the occult if stories circulate long enough. Could people up to no good have chosen the location on their own after hearing the tall tales? Sure.

Street signs no longer mark the area clearly, probably because too many curious people went searching around. You might have to ask an expert where exactly to find the haunted area. If you’re not afraid of an SUV chasing down your car, however, take a drive to the farthest corner of Delco to try to find Satanville.

BUT BEWARE.
