Bacon Brothers Open ‘Ruth’s Room’ at Philadelphia Juvenile Justice Services Center
Golden Globe-winning musician, actor, and philanthropist Kevin Bacon teamed up with his bandmate brother Michael to cut the ribbon on a unique project in their native home of Philadelphia.
On Wednesday, Jan. 29, the Bacon brothers attended the opening of “Ruth’s Room” at the Philadelphia Juvenile Justice Services Center in West Philadelphia. “Ruth’s Room” is named in honor of the brothers’ late mother, Ruth.
During her lifetime, Ruth Bacon dedicated herself to education and justice advocacy. In 1985, she created a nursery school and a family bonding experience at the State Correctional Institution in Skippack Township, Pennsylvania.
The Center City native sons chose Philadelphia for their new project, which connects young people facing adversity with music as a source of hope and healing. Kevin and Michael said they are continuing their mother’s work through their family’s nonprofit, SixDegrees.org.
“She would have loved this idea,” Kevin said in an interview with Action News 6 Philadelphia. “I think the only thing she probably wouldn’t have liked is her name being on it. If the young people who are detained there are interested, they can put a band together and get music lessons. I always say, when people are playing music, nobody gets hurt.”
The Bacon brothers have enlisted the help of Rock to the Future to provide free music programs for Philadelphia kids.
Kevin and Michael invite those in Philadelphia and beyond with empty community centers or spaces that could benefit from this music support initiative to contact SixDegrees.org.
