Elmwood Park Zoo Submits Expansion Proposal to Norristown Council
Elmwood Park Zoo in Norristown is seeking to expand again. The Philadelphia-area family attraction has filed a conditional use application with Norristown’s municipal council for expansion, which the municipality’s planning commission discussed on Tuesday, March 11. In their application, zoo officials called for expanding facilities within the existing 72-acre property.
According to municipal documents obtained by the Patch of Norristown, the expansion plans call for new wildlife exhibits, revitalized existing exhibits, and extensive infrastructure upgrades undertaken in three phases.
On Elmwood Park Zoo’s website, zoo officials detail a master plan for the facility that outlines the work across all three phases:
- Phase one involved renovating and building a state-of-the-art animal hospital and a new visitor center.
- Phase two of the zoo’s expansion includes constructing a bridge over Stony Creek to create improved access to other areas of the zoo. Zoo officials reported that the Genuardi Family Foundation has contributed $1 million toward this project. Other enhancements in this phase include constructing a new Amur tiger exhibit and building new exhibits for the zoo’s elk, antelope, and other hoofed animals. The zoo’s North American animals, including bald eagles and porcupines, would be moved to this new location on the opposite side of the new Stony Creek Bridge.
- Phase three will involve building a new education facility that features classroom space, holding areas for the zoo’s education ambassadors, and an enclosed aviary for live animal shows. The zoo also intends to redevelop its South Gate entrance to improve the drop-off area for visiting school groups.
Elmwood Park Zoo is one of Philadelphia’s most popular visitor attractions. According to its website, the zoo welcomes more than 500,000 guests annually.
