Starting tonight (4/21), workers will shut down Independence Mall overnight for needed utility repairs. The work will go on through May 15, 2025, happening from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. on weeknights.
The work is taking place between Walnut and Chestnut Streets. During closures, PennDOT recommends drivers take Walnut Street to 7th Street, then head to Chestnut Street.
Work at Independence Mall happens Monday through Thursday nights to avoid disrupting the heavy daytime foot traffic around the Liberty Bell Center and nearby attractions.
People can still get to areas right up to where construction is happening. While crews have their Highway Occupancy Permit, bad weather might push back completion dates.
This four-week project is part of Philadelphia's District 6 infrastructure improvements. The underground systems below the street need urgent repairs.
Previous work near Independence Hall caused major traffic jams in this busy historic area. People traveling at night should give themselves extra time.
By doing the work overnight, tourists can still visit the area's popular sites during the day. These landmarks draw thousands of visitors daily without disruption.

These necessary repairs support the city's preservation efforts. Working at night helps balance keeping up infrastructure while letting tourists visit.
