A candy war is heating up in Pennsylvania's legislature. Senator Lisa Boscola's upcoming bill wants to make PEEPS the state's official candy, putting it head-to-head with supporters of Hershey's Kisses.

These squishy marshmallow treats have been made in Bethlehem's Just Born factory since 1953, providing jobs to workers across the Lehigh Valley. "Given Pennsylvania's rich confectionery history, it is fitting that we finally honor one of our own with this unique designation," said Boscola to WPXI.

The push for PEEPS isn't going unopposed. Another bill, kicked off by Council Rock School District students and already cleared by the House, wants Hershey's Kisses to grab the sweet title.

Just Born's factory has been churning out candy from its Bethlehem home for more than 70 years. They've become a big part of the community through jobs, giving back, and working with local groups.

This candy showdown highlights Pennsylvania's candy-making legacy. While Hershey's started making their famous Kisses in 1894, PEEPS joined the candy scene in 1953, both adding their own flavor to the state's sweet history.

Boscola, standing up for her district's PEEPS-making neighbors, thinks these marshmallow birds show off "Pennsylvania's well-earned reputation for satisfying candy cravings, but of our imagination and enduring spirit."

Even with its candy-making fame, Pennsylvania hasn't picked an official candy yet.
