The Philadelphia Free Library encourages the community to explore the wonders of nature in the city or in their backyard. Library staff have announced a series of programs to jumpstart creativity and exploration this season. Highlights are presented below, with more events featured on the library's website.

Dig Into Kids' Gardening

The Kids Gardening Club at the Philadelphia City Institute invites young gardeners to learn ways to get growing at home.

The club meets on the following dates:

  • Thursday, June 12, at 3:30 p.m.
  • Thursday, June 26, at 3:30 p.m.
  • Thursday, July 10, at 3:30 p.m.
  • Thursday, July 24, at 3:30 p.m.

Experience the Joys of Urban Gardening

Join Penn State Extension Master Gardener Barbara Mancini as she reveals the benefits of native plants in the urban landscape.  Beginning and experienced gardeners will gain helpful tips and techniques for creating a native garden, no matter how large or small a space may be.

Urban gardening workshops will be offered on the following dates and times:

  • Joseph E. Coleman Northwest Regional Library: Saturday, May 3, at noon
  • Roxborough Library: Monday, May 12, at 4 p.m.
  • West Oak Lane Library: Tuesday, May 13, at 4 p.m.
  • Queen Memorial Library: Monday, May 19, at 5:30 p.m.
  • Bustleton Library: Thursday, May 22, at 10:30 a.m.
  • Lovett Memorial Library: Tuesday, May 27, at 4 p.m.
  • Philadelphia City Institute: Saturday, July 26, at 2 p.m.

Go on a Bird Walk

Led by birding specialist Holger Pflicke, this family-friendly walk will help participants explore the many bird species that call the Philadelphia community home. Along the way, guests will learn birding skills, witness wildlife, and learn more about the city's green spaces.

 Bird walks wil be held on the following dates and times:

  • Falls of Schuylkill Library: Saturday, May 3, at 10 a.m.
  • South Philadelphia Library: Wednesday, May 7, at 4:30 p.m.
  • Children's Department at Parkway Central Library: Saturday, May 10, at 9 a.m.
  • Greater Olney Library: Saturday, May 17, at 10 a.m.
  • Fishtown Community Library: Saturday, May 24, at 10:30 a.m.
  • Penn Treaty Park: Saturday, May 24, at 10:30 a.m.
