ABC News has announced that its flagship morning news program Good Morning America will mark its 50th anniversary on the air and the upcoming 250th anniversary of the United States with a new year-long series "50 States in 50 Weeks."
According to ABC News, a GMA anchor or correspondent will visit one state each week, following the order in which the states were admitted into the United States. The series begins on Thursday, July 3, with a visit to Delaware. There, chief metrologist Ginger Zee will profile the lifeguards of Rehoboth Beach.
"I can't think of a better way to kick off this journey than in Delaware, our very first state," said Ginger Zee, chief meteorologist. "Meeting the Rehoboth Beach lifeguards and seeing their commitment to community and safety perfectly captures the spirit of what this series is all about, especially ahead of Fourth of July weekend."
In every state visited, the GMA team will profile an individual who is making a difference through their commitment to community and spotlight the unique places, culture, and history of the state.
Additional coverage from "50 States in 50 Weeks: America the Beautiful" will air on GMA3, ABC News Live, and ABC News digital and social platforms.
“This series is a chance for us to explore the country and share stories that reflect the heart of each state,” said Simone Swink, senior executive producer of GMA, to Deadline Hollywood. “We're looking forward to meeting people, highlighting what makes each state special, and proudly keeping the ‘A' in ‘GMA.'”
