Amazon Fresh, the online retailer's tech-centric supermarket chain, will open its Northern Liberties storefront in August. The announcement comes almost five years after the company announced plans for the Philadelphia location.

The grand opening of Amazon Fresh at the corner of Sixth and Spring Garden streets will take place on Thursday, August 14, an Amazon spokesperson, Griffin Bush, confirmed with the PhillyVoice on Thursday, July 24. Signage promoting the opening is displayed on the building's storefront. The facade of the building carries the signature green trim and other design elements despite the structure sitting empty for several years.

Philadelphia's Amazon Fresh will be the first for the retailer in Philadelphia. The company's other locations in the Philly region include Bensalem, Broomall, Langhorne, Warrington, and Willow Grove. Several of these stores also experienced a delayed opening following their initial announcements.

In 2023, Amazon closed several of its original locations and halted new location openings to reimagine the layout of its stores. Amazon debuted the Fresh concept in 2020.

According to a PhillyVoice report, Amazon Fresh's "Just Walk Out" feature allowed customers to pay for groceries without stopping at a register. This feature has been replaced with new Amazon Fresh Dash Carts, which enable customers to scan products as they shop and keep a running tab that gets charged to their Amazon account when they conclude their purchase. Those who don't have Amazon accounts can still shop at Amazon Fresh by using the store's registers.

Besides national brands, Amazon Fresh stores also feature the company's private-label brands, Aplenty and 365. When it opens, the Northern Liberties store will also offer a selection of beer and wine.

The retailer has obtained permits for two potential new locations in the region, including one at 9960 Roosevelt Blvd. in Northeast Philadelphia and another at 403 West Chester Pike in Havertown, Delaware County.
