South Jersey Restaurants Step Up in Absence of SNAP

South Jersey residents who have lost access to Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits amid the record-breaking government shutdown are getting some food support. 

Several restaurant owners have stepped up to help people and families affected by the pause in SNAP benefits.

Riccardo's Italian Restaurant in Browns Mills is providing confidential, judgment-free food assistance through an honor system, guided by owner Vito Russo.

"The community has embraced us for 52 years … it would almost be a sin to not reach out to the community that has embraced you for all those years," Russo said to The Courier Post.

At Gaetano's of Willingboro, customers have donated money and time to help others in need. The establishment previously announced it would provide free pizza to SNAP families.

Westampton Family Diner also funds meals for those in need through any purchased menu item, with receipts posted on a giving wall and meals prepared with care for those facing hardship.
