The Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commission (PHMC) is inviting nominations for its Historical Marker Program as part of the broader commemoration of America's 250th anniversary.

The program already features more than 2,500 markers across all 67 counties, underscoring Pennsylvania's role as the “Keystone of American History.”

“As we celebrate ‘Pennsylvania 250: The Keystone of American History,' we are reminded that the American experiment was shaped by stories in every corner of our Commonwealth,” said Andrea Lowery, commission executive director, to The Reading Eagle. “We are looking to the public to share the history they value — the hidden figures, local innovations, and pivotal moments that have helped build the Pennsylvania of today.”

The nomination process has been streamlined into a two-step timeline: First, a preapplication is due by April 1 for initial guidance, followed by a final nomination due by June 1 for those proposals invited to proceed after the preapplication review.

Individuals, historical societies, local governments, nonprofit organizations, and community groups may submit nominations. Independent historians and scholars from across Pennsylvania will evaluate all the proposals, with PHMC commissioners granting final approval.
