Alex Van Halen tapped Toto guitarist Steve Lukather as co-producer to finish recordings meant for the next Van Halen album before guitarist Eddie Van Halen passed away in 2020. The project features drums by Alex, guitar by Eddie, and bass by Wolfgang Van Halen. However, it still needs a singer.

Alex said to American Songwriter, “Many people have asked, 'What about releasing unreleased stuff?' Well, we're not gonna release it in its embryonic form because it wouldn't make any sense. It has to be of the quality and the level of where we left it. Not just to say, ‘Hey, here's some music that we made. If you like it, that's great.' No, it has to be the quality that we expect.”

Wolfgang Van Halen said that he doesn't have information about his uncle's plans yet, but he's ready to assist in any way. Finding a vocalist has proven difficult. Paul Rodgers declined an offer to join the recordings, and former singers David Lee Roth and Sammy Hagar remain excluded from consideration.

Wolfgang pointed out that he, his father, and his uncle spent years jamming together. He became the band's bassist in 2007 when they welcomed founding lead singer Roth back. This lineup toured North America three times and released what remains the band's final album, 2012's A Different Kind of Truth.

Wolfgang tours now behind his band Mammoth's third album, The End. Their next shows will start on March 5 in Buffalo, New York.
