There are few band that have as dedicated and loyal a following as the Grateful Dead. Following them around from concert to concert became commonplace for a slew of "Deadheads," and now, those fans are being honored.

A new film about the strong fanbase for the Grateful Dead will debut in theaters across the U.S. this summer.

The movie, called Summer Tour, was directed by Mischa Richter and co-produced by actress Chloe Sevigny, according to Rolling Stone. It centers around the Deadhead community as they go from concert to concert to see Dead & Company on the group's final tour in 2023.

The film, which debuted at the 2025 Telluride Film Festival, has been acquired by Utopia. Now, the company is planning a tour for the film that will feature screenings and performances by bands and acts inspired by the Grateful Dead.

The Grateful Dead: Band's Fans Are Among the Most Loyal in Rock

You can measure the Grateful Dead in ticket stubs and live tapes, sure. But the real legacy walks around in tie-dye and old denim, carrying stories like spare change.

Deadheads aren’t casual. They don’t dip in for a greatest hits set and call it a night. They show up early. They know the parking lot is part of the show. The music bleeds into the asphalt, into the patchwork of vans and folding tables and hand-painted signs. It’s less a fan base than a traveling town that reassembles itself wherever the band once plugged in.

They trade bootlegs like family recipes. At shows, strangers hug like cousins when the first notes of “Scarlet Begonias” drifted out of the speakers. Nobody’s checking a watch. Nobody’s angling for the encore selfie. They’re there for the long haul, for the jam that wanders off and finds its way back twenty minutes later.

Loyal isn’t a strong enough word. This is generational devotion. Parents passing down ticket stubs the way other families pass down jewelry. Grateful Dead songs are the glue, but the community is the real miracle.
