PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA - MARCH 28: Travelers wait in a line that stretches to the parking garage at the Philadelphia International Airport on March 28, 2026 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. TSA agents have worked without pay for over a month during a partial government shutdown. U.S. President Donald Trump deployed ICE agents to U.S. airports on Monday, and on Friday he issued an executive order instructing DHS to pay TSA agents.

Travel through Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) is beginning to look more familiar again as the Transportation Security Administration reopens key security checkpoints that had been temporarily closed due to staffing shortages. According to 6abc Action News, TSA screening lanes in Terminal A‑West reopened early Friday morning on April 3, with Terminal F scheduled to reopen on Tuesday, April 7, helping ease congestion just as spring travel ramps up.

Airport officials confirmed that the Terminal A‑West checkpoint reopened at 5:00 a.m., returning to regular operating hours. Terminal F will follow suit on April 7, reopening at 4:30 a.m., according to the Philadelphia International Airport’s official announcement. The staggered reopenings mark a significant step toward restoring full security operations across the airport.

The temporary closures were the result of TSA staffing challenges linked to a prolonged partial government shutdown, which led many TSA officers to work without pay for weeks.

For travelers, the reopenings could not come soon enough. During the closures, PHL advised passengers to arrive at least 2.5 hours early for domestic flights and 3.5 hours early for international travel due to unpredictable wait times. With Terminal A‑West and Terminal F returning to service, airport officials say travelers should begin seeing smoother security flow and shorter wait times.

The reopening follows an executive order that resumed pay for TSA officers, allowing staffing levels to stabilize. According to reporting from 6abc, early Friday morning, travelers expressed relief as lines moved quickly and wait times dropped significantly.

PHL reminds travelers that all terminals remain connected post‑security, meaning passengers can use any open TSA checkpoint to reach their departure gates. However, travelers are still encouraged to check checkpoint hours ahead of time and allow extra time as operations continue to normalize.

As the busy spring and summer travel season approaches, the reopening of TSA checkpoints at Philadelphia International Airport signals a welcome return to predictable travel — and fewer anxiety‑inducing lines at security.

For updates, travelers can monitor checkpoint hours through phl.org or follow local airport advisories.
