You know how it is when you break up with someone, and you figure you will never see them again, so maybe you say some unpleasant things and just let it all rip? Then, a few years later, you end up having to come face-to-face with that person again, and you’re probably wishing you had just kept those extra thoughts to yourself.

That might be how Philadelphia Eagles cornerback Darius Slay feels. As it turns out, a coach that he did not enjoy working under may be making his was to the Eagles. This coach is a pretty controversial one, too. It’s an interesting development in the Eagles’ off-season story, and time will tell how it all shakes out. Read on for the full scoop.

  • The coach

That coach is Matt Patricia. He served as the head coach for the Detroit Lions from 2018-2020. His time with the Lions was, well, not good. He had a losing record and was not well liked by the team. That’s putting it nicely. Hey, I don’t personally know the guy, so I can’t say anything bad about him. He may be a fuzzy, fun, warm dude. But, this is what was widely reported in Detroit at the time.

“Matt Patricia, who interviewed for the Denver Broncos’ defensive coordinator job that ended up going to Vance Joseph, has spoken with other teams about roles on their defensive coaching staffs,” ESPN’s Dan Graziano said. “Patricia’s contract in New England is up, and it feels likely he’ll move on somewhere else after a rough year coaching the offense for the Pats.”

Patricia has been serving as the Patriots’ assistant coach, and is reportedly now a coaching free agent. A few weeks ago, he interviewed for the defensive coordinator position with the Denver Broncos. He didn’t get it, but the Broncos are reportedly still interested in him for a different role.

Free agency, draft buzz from the NFL combine: What we heard on Daniel Jones, Derek Carr, Anthony Richardson

Where will Derek Carr land? New deal for Daniel Jones? Tag coming for Lamar Jackson? And is Anthony Richardson rising? Here's what we heard in Indy.

  • The Eagles

According to Karen Guregian of the Boston Herald, the Philadelphia Eagles want Patricia. “I’m hearing that Matt Patricia has a shot to land with the Philadelphia Eagles on the defensive staff, presumably as a linebackers coach,” she tweeted.

  • Eagles cornerback Darius Slay

Eagles cornerback Darius Slay played under Patricia in Detroit. Slay has been very critical of Patricia for how he handled his coaching duties in Detroit. Slay went on Toucher & Rich during Super Bowl week and commented on Patricia, stating, “As a man, me and him just don’t get along.”
