Mike Rutherford on Whether Genesis Will Reunite
There are a number of classic rock reunions fans are clamoring for, and among the most desired is Genesis. If Mike Rutherford is to be taken seriously, a reunion certainly isn’t off the table.
Rutherford appeared on Good Morning Britain today (March 13) when he was asked the big reunion question. As transcribed by Planet Rock (streaming video of the appearance isn’t available for playback in the United States), Rutherford answered, “ “I’ve always said, for years, never say never and we did the [reunion] tour 10 years ago… Who knows? Phil [Collins] is in good shape now out touring, his son [Nic] is drumming – fantastic drummer. Never say never…We’re all fit and healthy and we get on well, [we’re] good friends. I mean, you never know.”
The most recent comments about a possible Genesis reunion came from Collins during an interview with Rolling Stone back in August 2018. Collins said the only way he would do a reunion is if his son would serve as the band’s drummer.
“Mike made the appropriate comment of, ‘He just gets it. He just gets what is needed and what is required and why you’re doing this for that song,’” said Collins. “I thought that was a wonderful thing to say…if we did anything I think it would have to be with Nic on drums because I don’t think I’m capable of it. I think their opinion of Nic is high enough for them to take him on board as part of the band.”
As with any reunion buzz, everything is just talk, but Genesis fans probably appreciate any glimmer of hope for a reunion and understandably so. Few thought Phil Collins would return to the stage after a lengthy absence, and he’s had a lot of success with his “Not Dead Yet” tour that launched in October 2018.
