Todd Rundgren on the Rock Hall: ‘They should blow the place up if Motorhead doesn’t get inducted.’
Todd Rundgren didn’t mince words about the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in a recent interview with Cincinnati.com.
When congratulated about his second Rock Hall nomination but acknowledging his lack of excitement about the honor, Rundgren said, “Well, my personal response is ‘no comment.’ The whole idea of the so-called fan vote is bogus. We all know that. Thankfully, my fans have figured that out.”
That comment might be a reference to last year when Rundgren received his first Rock Hall nomination and was the only act included on the fan ballot that wasn’t inducted. Rundgren’s most incendiary comments, however, came when he acknowledged some of this year’s nominees and how they have yet to be inducted.
“…I don’t understand why they beat around the bush with a band like Thin Lizzy, or Motorhead, or T. Rex,” said Rundgren. “Why don’t they just put them in there? Because they’re never gonna play again. All of these other acts are still playing. These were real rock bands that were influential and will never play again because the lead singers are gone. Why are they even putting that up for a vote?…I don’t understand why it’s even up to a vote whether Motorhead gets into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame or not. I mean, they should blow the place up if Motorhead doesn’t get inducted, put it that way.”
While Rundgren’s statement shouldn’t be taken literally, he is certainly echoing a very common complaint voiced by many rock fans about the lack of hard rock and heavy metal acts in the Rock Hall.
As of publishing Rundgren is in 11th place out of 16 in the Rock Hall Fan Vote, which lasts through January 10, 2020 at 11:59 PM EST. The top five artists from the fan vote will make up the “fans’ ballot” and be counted among the other ballots from the Rock Hall voting committee. Fans can vote for artists in three different ways:
-By searching “Vote Rock Hall 2020” or any nominee name plus “vote” on Google to cast a vote
-By voting at RockHall.com
-By voting in person at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Museum in Cleveland
