Tommy Lee Says Rock Has Become Too Safe
Tommy Lee was asked recently whether rock has become too safe, and he gave a rather blunt answer.
In an interview with Classic Rock, Lee agreed the current state of rock music has become too safe adding, “It’s kind of sad.”
He elaborated, “I haven’t heard a rock record that’s blown my mind in a long while. I can’t think of anything that I’ve heard lately that has made me go: ‘Holy f—!’ And I’m constantly looking. When you watch a lot of hip-hop videos or EDM videos, it’s all about people having a good time and just f—ing living life, just f—ing rock-starrin’ it. It’s like the rock’n’roll lifestyle is emulated by so many other genres.”
Lee’s been promoting his new album, ANDRO, which comes out tomorrow (October 16) and leans heavily into EDM. When asked whether it bothers him that Mötley Crüe fans will likely not be into his latest solo LP, he said, “I kind of feel sorry for people who are just rock fans, cos they’re gonna miss some really f—ing cool songs that aren’t necessarily straight rock. They’re just f—ing cool songs.”
When asked whether he actually cares what people think of ANDRO, he adds, “Everything I do, I do with passion, and I’m an insane perfectionist, so I do care what people think. But I don’t care about being put in a box. I see people commenting sometimes: ‘Well it doesn’t sound like Mötley Crüe.’ Well of course it doesn’t, cos no one from f—ing Mötley Crüe is on it. I can’t believe you even just said that.”
