Philadelphia Sports Venue Dropping Famous Name

Another Philadelphia sports name change is happening to our venues down in South Philly. Will people dig the name change or always call it the previous one? You honestly never know! According to a 6 ABC article, the name "Wells Fargo Center" will be dropped from the outside of the home of our Philadelphia 76ers and Flyers next year when the contract expires. (Photo by Tim Nwachukwu/Getty Images) Philadelphia Sports Venue Naming History The Wells Fargo Center was built in 1996 replacing the Spectrum. It was originally called Spectrum II but quickly took on many names. It was the CoreStates Center from 1996 to 1998, then the First Union Center from 1998 to 2003 then the Wachovia Center from 2003 to 2010. From there, it was named the Wells Fargo Center after the company acquired Wachovia. The stadium cost $210 million to build on the former site of John F. Kennedy Stadium, formerly Philadelphia Municipal and Sesquicentennial Stadium. What a great history of Philadelphia sports stadiums and arenas. Fans Chime In For Name Of New Stadium Overwhelmingly, what I am seeing on social media is people begging for the new stadium to be called "Wawa Center" or something along those lines. Wawa has been a staple in this community, a fan favorite. Imagine "The Wawa Hoagie Center" would just be amazing. Even our friends over at WMMR had to poke fun a bit at the new name! https://twitter.com/933WMMR/status/1816269659949170920
