HBO Is Developing Three More ‘Game Of Thrones’ Spin-Offs
HBO is developing three additional Game of Thrones prequel projects, racking up the prospective spinoff count to six now, The Hollywood Reporter confirmed.
Based on George R.R. Martin’s fantasy novels, one of the working titles is called 9 Voyages, a story which follows Lord Corlys Velaryon, aka The Sea Snake, the Lord of the Tides and head of House Velaryon. The Sea Snake will also appear in the upcoming Game of Thrones prequel, House of the Dragon, where he’s played by Steve Toussaint.
The second project’s working title is 10,000 Ships and revolves around warrior queen Princess Nymeria, an ancestor of House Martell — who founded of the kingdom of Dorne. Princess Nymeria’s story is set approximately a millennium before the events in Game of Thrones, making it the oldest Westeros timeline of any of the upcoming projects. Apparently, HBO shot a prequel pilot in 2019 set even further back, but it never made it to series.
The third new project (title not yet released) is set in the poorest slum of King’s Landing, Flea Bottom — home of brothels, maze-like narrow streets, ramshackle buildings, and dark alleys where characters like Ser Davos Seaworth and Robert Baratheon’s bastard son Gendry Baratheon were born.
The projects are added to the queue after upcoming series House of the Dragon, which begins filming in the U.K. next month starring Olivia Cooke, Emma D’Arcy, Paddy Considine and Matt Smith. House of the Dragon follows the story of House Targaryen 300 years before the events in Game of Thrones and builds to a destructive civil war that tears Westeros apart. The series is expected to premiere in 2022.
Another HBO project in development is based on Martin’s popular Dunk and Egg, a series of fantasy novellas by George R. R. Martin set in the world of his A Song of Ice and Fire novels. The novellas follow the adventures of hedge knight Ser Duncan the Tall (who was also born in Flea Bottom) and his squire Egg, who would later become King Aegon V Targaryen.
Finally, there is an animated Game of Thrones project being considered but the topic hasn’t been released yet.
