I Saw Almost Famous on Broadway!
Recently I had the chance to see one of my all-time favorite movies in a different – but very cool and equally amazing – variation!
Almost Famous, the musical based on the iconic film directed by Cameron Crowe is currently playing on Broadway, and, man, was it worth the price of admission!
Over the holidays, Pattyann and I took the trip up to New York City to see the play at the gorgeous Jacobs Theatre on West 45th Street.
It was such a great time.
If you enjoy the film itself just like me, the Broadway show is nearly an identical reenactment of the movie, with some newly added songs from the ‘70s, such as Ramble On, Higher Ground, Simple Man, and Midnight Rider.
All of the actors and actresses involved in the show are phenomenal!
They can all sing their hearts out, probably as well as any singers I have ever seen at a Broadway show – only rivaled by my singing in the shower – and they were fantastic dancers, too!
An actress named Solea Pfeiffer, who has amazing voice and kills her role in the show, plays the character Penny Lane, who many will remember was played by Kate Hudson in the original film.
The character Russell Hammond was played by actor Chris Wood, who looks just like the character from the movie, originally portrayed by Billy Crudup.
Whoever was in charge of casting Wood for that role gets an A+, and so does Wood for his performance!
Not only all that, but the guys who make up the band Stillwater in the show actually played their own instruments!
As a viewer, you could tell a lot of time and effort was put into the show from the casting, the song choices, and everything in between.
Even the minor details were perfectly executed such as the costumes each character was wearing throughout the show.
There was a sea of bell-bottom pants, all sorts of retro t-shirts, furry collars, and random scarves that screamed ‘70s fashion.
You could tell a lot of thought went into the outfits for the show!
At the end of the play, during the production curtain call, each character takes the stage belting out a line from “Fever Dog” for their final bows, kind of like a free wheeling of all their great voices!
What an amazing performance by them all!
It’s a shame the play is closing this Sunday, January 8th, but if you can somehow score some last-minute tickets, it is definitely worth the trip up to NYC!
Hopefully, the show will end up touring because it is that amazing, and I would definitely love to catch it again!
