I Called a Special Olympics Basketball Game!
Yesterday, I had the pleasure of calling an amazing basketball game while sitting courtside, and it was absolutely awesome!
I know what most of you are thinking…
It has to be a Philadelphia 76ers game he is talking about…
But you would be wrong!
In fact, I think calling this game was even cooler!
I had the honor of calling a Special Olympics basketball game last night at Pottsville High School up in the beautiful Schuylkill County.
The game was played in the gymnasium named Martz Hall, otherwise known as “The Mecca.”
It is just an iconic gym that hosts many Pennsylvania state playoff games.
The place has seen its fair share of great players and great games.
In fact, I was told yesterday that Kobe Bryant himself played there back in 1995 during a playoff run with his high school alma mater, Lower Merion.
That is how you know the gym is historic.
Anyway, the game itself was the kids and adults of The Schuylkill County Special Olympics versus the boys and girls of Pottsville High School representing the Crimson Tide and the Lady Tide!
The game was so fun to watch.
Just to see the joy on everyone’s faces playing the game of basketball was amazing to see.
I was stoked!
Obviously, my job as public address announcer for the 76ers is very, very cool, but it is taken very seriously by the professionals, so seeing the players involved yesterday playing for the pure enjoyment and love of the game puts things in perspective.
Doing the introductions for the Special Olympics athletes was truly an honor and made me extremely happy!
I want to send a BIG thank you to my dear friend, Jordan Green, a native of Orwigsburg, Pennsylvania, for getting me involved with The Schuylkill County Special Olympics.
I had a blast, and can’t wait for the next time!
