Tax season is here, and about 70% of Americans will receive a refund for overpayments in 2022. Smart Asset ranked the places that will receive the highest tax refunds in Pennsylvania separated by county, and counties in the Philadelphia area dominated the top 10.

Local residents tend to classify the “five-county area” as the city of Philadelphia (which is its own county) and the suburban counties Delaware, Montgomery, Chester, and Bucks to make up the greater Philadelphia area.

Chester County topped the list. Over 180,000 people in ChesCo filed for 2022, and their average return came in at $3,348.

Montgomery County finished second with a $3,289 average return within a significantly higher population of files at 307, 920. Delaware County ranked third on the list with a $3,218 average, and Bucks County was fourth with a $3,140 average.

The city of Philadelphia ranked ninth on the list. Philadelphia County had nearly twice as many applicants as any other county in the top 10, so the larger number created a higher variance that contributed to the final number of $3,014.

Susquehanna County was one of three counties in the northeastern part of the state listed in the top 10 of the highest tax refunds in Pennsylvania.

Greene County, located in the far southwest corner of the state by the West Virginia border, was sixth on the final list. It was the only county in the top 10 within the proximity of Pittsburgh, the state of Pennsylvania’s second-biggest city.
