41 & Done: On Stage Announcement During Pink Floyd Show At JFK
On This edition of 41 & Done, John explains how an appearance at a mall could lead to a friendship with David Gilmour of Pink Floyd, and an eventual emergency on stage announcement at JFK Stadium.
At the Granite Run Mall sometime back in the early 80s, John ended up doing a in store appearance with David Gilmour. Out of that appearance, the two of them became fast friends. Whenever he was in town, David would call John up. They would always get together if DeBella was in England.
Well, in 1987, Pink Floyd came to Philadelphia to play JFK Stadium and John was going to the show.
John sat with the press at the absolute top of JFK Stadium. At some point, there was an intermission in the show. All of a sudden, there was an announcement: “John DeBella, would you please come to the backstage area? Please come to the backstage.” He gets to the backstage area where Gilmour says, “come here, come here. We’ve got a problem.”
The crowd was pushing up against the front of the stage. The cops and the fire marshals in attendance were afraid that it was going to get dangerous. They needed somebody to go out there and ask them to back up or the show was going to get shut down. John went out to make an emergency on stage announcement, and chaos ensued.
