John DeBella's Last Veterans Radiothon
WMGK

For the last 17 years John DeBella has done everything he can to help bring Veterans issues to the front of people's minds in the city of Philadelphia. This Friday is John DeBella's last Veterans Radiothon he will host. The goal of this 12-hour long broadcast is to raise as much money for the Veterans Multi-Service Center as we possibly can. The VMC is a great organization that helps returning servicemen and women get acclimated to civilian life and guides them through what is necessary to get back on their feet. They have a variety of programs to help these men and women navigate through the red tape and bureaucracy of the Veterans Affairs office. The VMC will help house vets who need it. They'll give them the necessary job training and help with job placement so the men and women are able to succeed on their own.

A few programs that the Veterans Multi-Service Center has started are made to meet the specific needs of certain groups of veterans. The Women's Veterans Program is made for female veterans, who have needs that are different at times from male veterans. The VMC's website explains the need for this Women's program:

As the only program of its kind in the Region, community based, client centered innovation is the heart of our Women Veterans Program. We’re proud to offer comprehensive resources for Women Veterans and their families in a trauma-informed space, tailored to the unique needs of military women. The WVP Old City location features a clothing closet, open computer lab, lending library, children’s play area and a full calendar of wellness and fellowship events. All of our activities, resources and events are free for military women and their children.

One of the most important programs the VMC has is a suicide prevention program that will have a veteran peer support specialist work with a veteran who may be struggling with these thoughts. The peer specialist is a vet who also went through thoughts of suicide, so they have a deep knowledge of what the person is dealing with. Each vet who uses this program will have a case manager that helps them get to connect with the V.A. and non-V.A. community to make sure their needs are met.

With John's retirement approaching, this is the final year he will be hosting the Veterans Radiothon and it should be the biggest one we've ever had. A celebration of both our veterans, and the support John DeBella has shown them over the 17 years of hosting this event. The Radiothon will continue after John, but a massive donation number is a perfect way, and probably the preferable way to end an amazing career

If you would like to help out, there are multiple ways that you can donate to the Veterans Radiothon from now through Friday. You can make a Secure Online Donation, or you can call the phone room on Friday (6/16/23 between 6a-6p) 1-800-678-WMGK (9645). If you'd like to swing by the broadcast and donate cash directly, you can do that as well. The final way to donate could pay off for you too, it's our Radiothon auction. Each hour we have an auction item up for bidding. Throughout the broadcast items will close on an hourly basis. This is probably the best group of autographed items, collectibles, and concert experiences we've ever had.

Bid on these items:

MGK thanks you, our incredible listeners, for your generous donations at this year's Veterans Radiothon. With your help and the help of our charitable sponsors and volunteers, we raised $162,327.53 for the Philadelphia Veterans Multi-Service Center (VMC).
