This weekend we took the boys ice skating for the first time. It's been well over a decade since I've been on ice skates. I've slingshotted someone across the ice at the Wells Fargo Center more recently than I've put a pair of skates on. There was a 50/50 chance this could have been an abject disaster. Kids falling, kids crying, dad's old bones hitting the ice. A real sh!tshow.

Lucky for us we were down the shore for Thanksgiving and Ludlam in Sea Isle City, had a winter village thing we went to. Santa was there, food, drinks and an "ice skating" area. It wasn't actually ice skating, but some hard plastic or fiberglass that simulate the idea of ice. The boys were on ice skates and I got to walk around with them. This was a good way to get them used to the feeling of wearing skates.

Something people should know about my boys is, and it's probably the same for most families, number one is slightly more timid to try things while number 2 is usually "let's go!" It very much went this way to start when we got on the ice. Number 1 grabbed onto the wall and was in no way going to immediately go straight onto the ice.Number 2 had the same idea, but was much more accepting of grabbing my hand and making our way out a little bit.  One warmed up within a few minutes and decided he'd take a few steps off the wall with dad.

We only had the ice for an hour and by the time we got done number 1 was going from side wall to side wall by himself. Proud of that kid! Number 2 also did great. After about 25 minutes he said was cold and finished. Both boys said they had a great time. Well, number 2 had fun he also said he never wants to ice skate again. We'll see. Maybe dad just needs to remember to dress them warmer!

Oh and I did take a spill. With 30 seconds left in our hour, I was trying to make a tight turn and lost an edge. Slid right out and whacked my elbow on the ice. I was so close to being perfect, instead my old ass elbow hurts a lot. Can't wait to do it again!
