Matt Cord Interviewed Green Day Back In 1994, Including A Hilarious Story Involving A Tricycle
Let me take you in a time machine back to about 30 years ago, and the early days of a band that would go on to have one hell of a run, and still running, mind you — Green Day.
The year is 1994 and I was doing a radio show — I guess not much has changed!
I was doing the night shift at our sister station, WMMR, from 6 p.m. until 10 p.m. and I was hosting the first-ever alt-rock show in Philadelphia.
The show was called Planet M, and it was a ton of fun.
Matt Cord’s Interview With Green Day In 1994…
An up-and-coming new band called Green Day was just starting to make a name for themselves, and it resulted in a major label record deal with Warner Music Group.
So, like all new bands do, they went on a press run, and they made a stop by the station for an interview.
Back then, MMR was located at 5th and Market — there are a ton of great memories there, and this story with Green Day is definitely one of them!
The members of the band that stopped by were bassist, Mike Dirt, and lead vocalist, Billie Joe Armstrong.
One member of the band was noticeably missing, or should I say, didn’t come around — the drummer, Tre Cool.
A Tricycle…
Tre Cool was absent that night because the night before, he accidentally rode a tricycle off the roof of the Holiday Inn that Green Day was staying at.
You read that right — Tre Cool rode a tricycle off a Holiday Inn roof!
I know it sounds insane, but it happened!
It was a really funny story that Mike and Billie told me about.
I wish I still had the audio from that interview.
But I do have a picture from that night that was taken on the news desk of Channel 3 TV, which shared the same building as MMR back in the day.
I wonder if Tre Cool ever decided to ride a tricycle again, or if that was the last time!
Green Day will be coming to Philly this August, and I’m sure it’ll be a great show — tricycle or not!
