JT Realmuto Will Be Hard For Phillies To Replace While On IL
The Phillies season has mostly been pain-free. They lost Trea Turner for a few weeks, but Edmundo Sosa has replaced him without missing a beat. The latest injury might hit them a bit harder though. JT Realmuto is heading to the IL and will require surgery on his right knee.
There is no clear timetable for his return. When you hear surgery, you don’t think quick turnaround. The menisectomy surgery will take place tomorrow, and his stint is retroactive to Sunday. It is not a meniscus repair, it is a removal. Those tend to heal much quicker. So maybe he is not out that long. But any time missed could hurt the Phillies. especially given what they have behind him.
JT Realmuto Will Be Hard To Replace
JT Realmuto is an injury that could hurt them more than Turner did. Turner is obviously a great player, but they had Edmundo Sosa behind him.
The Phillies do not have good depth behind JT Realmuto. Garrett Stubbs may be the designated vibesman, but he has been a liability at the plate whenever he plays. Rafael Marchan has only played 23 games in the MLB.
Jayson Stark joined The Best Show ever back in April and called JT Realmuto the most irreplaceable player on the Phillies.
“I’m not sure there has ever been a time in baseball where it is more important to have a catcher with a big-time arm… The more I thought about this, JT is clearly the most irreplaceable Phillie”
-Jayson Stark with The Best Show Ever
Turner’s bat was always gonna be missed. But they don’t lose much on the defensive side of the ball. JT Realmuto, between how he handles the baserunning, and how he handles the pitching staff, is a much bigger loss.
The Phillies are in a great position to survive any loss. They are the best team in baseball. They have a 9-game lead over the Braves and a 5-game lead over the Dodgers.
They have the cushion to survive it, but this injury could actually hurt them more than the Trea Turner one did. JT Realmuto does far more than be one of the best-hitting catchers for the Phillies. On the basepaths, and on the mound, they might feel the loss of JT going forward.
Hopefully, for them, he gets back soon.
