Gaudreau Family 5K to Honor Hockey Players, Raise Funds for School
After tragically losing two of their sons, the Gaudreau family of Sewell, New Jersey, is hosting a first-ever 5K benefit.
Following the death of her sons John and Matty, who were killed by the actions of an alleged drunk driver, Jane Gaudreau is working to keep the memory of her sons alive through a charitable effort.
The Gaudreau Family 5K will be held on Saturday, May 31, at Washington Lake Park in Sewell. Proceeds from the 5K will support Archbishop Damiano School, which serves students with diverse abilities. The 5K’s goal aims to raise $600,000 to transform the school’s playground for adaptive play.
“We started fundraising different things. John, before he passed, he donated three different times to Archbishop Damiano School, so we thought, ‘How can we keep the boys’ legacy going?'” said Jane Gaudreau in an interview with 6abc News.
This event will honor the spirit of the two boys: John was a pro player with the NHL, and Matty was a coach for Gloucester Catholic and an assistant coach of the Philadelphia Rebels.
The 5K has already generated interest with more than 500 signups. For those who can’t travel to South Jersey, virtual runs will be held in Columbus and Calgary, where John played professionally. A virtual run will also take place in Boston, where both boys played collegiate hockey.
