The City of Philadelphia is looking for new volunteers for its PlayStreets program.

The city's PlayStreets program provides free meals and safe places to play for children during the summer. This year's program runs from June 16 to Aug. 22.

According to a news announcement on the City of Philadelphia's website, PlayStreets can be found in every city neighborhood from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The program is free and open to all children 18 and younger; no registration is required.

PlayStreets' volunteer supervisors open and close the streets to traffic each day and administer the Summer Food Service Program, which offers lunches and snacks daily for children. The program also provides kids fun play kits containing balls, hula hoops, jump ropes, and sidewalk chalk.

To be considered as a PlayStreet, the neighborhood must adhere to the following:

  • Be a one-way street. Numbered streets are not eligible unless the street is a dead end.
  • Have a block resident volunteer who is a PlayStreet supervisor.
  • Maintain support from 75% of residents on the block who sign a petition and agree to support a PlayStreet in their community.
  • Not be within two blocks of another approved PlayStreet, playground, or recreation center.
  • Serve free meals to children 18 and younger.

Applicants may apply to become a PlayStreet supervisor by emailing Playstreets@phila.gov.
