Superman: James Gunn Casts New Clark Kent + Lois Lane
James Gunn has found his Superman and Lois Lane after months of auditions. Per The Hollywood Reporter, David Corenswet has been set to play Superman/Clark Kent, while Rachel Brosnahan is set to play Lois Lane in Gunn’s Superman: Legacy. The decision comes after the two were among the six selected to test in front of DC co-chairs Peter Safran and Gunn in full costume and makeup for the parts.
With two leading roles now set in stone, Gunn will now look to fill the shoes of Superman’s arch-nemesis, Lex Luthor…. Director Gunn celebrated the news on Twitter today (June 27), writing, “They are not only both incredible actors, but also wonderful people.”

Superman: Legacy has been slated for a worldwide release on July 11, 2025. The project was announced in January when Gunn and Safran laid out their plan for the first phase of this revamped slate and Superman: Legacy kicking off the first project of Gunn’s takeover. Superman: Legacy will “focus on Superman balancing his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing,” Entertainment Weekly reported at the time. Gunn, who wrote all three Guardians of the Galaxy films for Marvel, as well as The Suicide Squad and the Peacemaker TV Series for DC, is also writing for Superman: Legacy.

“It’s not like Superman is going to have exactly the same vibe as a Guardians movie,” Gunn told Rolling Stone. “It’s actually quite different.” Also included in this new phase in the DCEU, titled “Gods and Monsters,” there will also be a Supergirl film, a Wonder Woman-based HBO Max series, and a sequel to The Batman which will exist outside of the DCEU (it will be labeled as an “Elseworlds” film). There will also be a in-universe Batman film.
About The Leads
For Corenswet, 29, the film will be his breakout role in a major film. He has previously appeared in A24’s horror slasher film Pearl, as well as television series The Politician and We Own This City. Brosnahan, 32, is coming off the final season of her career-making role in Amazon’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, which has won an Emmy for playing the titular character.
