5 Things Millennials Reveal They Don’t Miss About The 90s
Growing up in the 90s had some definite perks. We were kids or teenagers as the technological boom was in full swing. We saw the rise of household computers, cell phones that could actually fit in your pocket, DVDs replaced the VHS system, and better video games and graphics. That’s barely skimming the top of how quickly things were being upgraded during this digital renaissance, but not everything about the 90s was great. Recently millennials took to Reddit to talk about things they definitely don’t miss from the 90s.
1. Smoking in restaurants
Couldn’t agree more. I remember as a kid my parents being asked smoking or non when we would go into a restaurant. Now that just seems so ridiculous. Eating in a room filled with cigarette smoke? It’s almost as ridiculous as smoking inside a metal tube at 30,000 feet in the air.
2. Calling a friend’s house and their parents picking up
What was even worse was calling a girlfriend’s house and having to get past that awkward teenager-parent chat. It was usually only one question, but it felt like an interrogation when you were in grade school or early high school.
3. Dial-up Internet
Few things were worse than having an AOL instant messenger chat with a friend and someone decided they needed to call the house. If you were ever mad at a sibling this was also great, petty revenge. You could just pick up any phone in the house and they’d get kicked offline.
4. Printed-out directions or maps
Sitting in the passenger seat with a giant atlas while my dad tried to figure out where he was going was quite entertaining. Not as entertaining as if Mapquest couldn’t fit the directions on 1 page. Thank goodness we’ve come so far and our cars talk to us now.
5. Missing something on TV because it was live and now it’s just gone forever
It was possible to record a show or movie, but it also seemed like a lot of steps. You needed a blank VHS tape, VCR, correct timing, and know-how. What kid knew all that? Today you choose your show, and push a button. It’s so advanced that you get to decide if you want all episodes, only new episodes that run at this time. What a jump!
There were a lot of responses on the Reddit thread about this if you’d like to see more. Millennials have seen the good (the best TGIF lineup, technological advances) and the bad of the ’90s (clothing and hairstyles). Overall we’ve been dropped into a pretty good spot on the timeline of human history. Be happy about that.
