On Monday, April 7, Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro announced his administration is investing in 81 community projects across the state through the Main Street Matters program.

According to a Pennsylvania Department of Community & Economic Development (DCED) news release, the investment in Pennsylvania's Main Street communities follows from Shapiro's work to create the new Main Street Matters initiative and secure $20 million for it in the 2024-2025 bipartisan budget.

The investment is designed to support economic development, job creation, and community revitalization in the state's Main Street communities.

The following are Main Street Matters-funded projects within the Philadelphia region:

Bucks County

  • $203,000 to Bristol Borough for decorative streetlight upgrades along Mill Street
  • $150,000 to Habitat for Humanity of Bucks County to support the organization's accessible housing program

Chester County

  • $1 million to Square Roots Community Partnership Inc. to restore a 19,000-square-foot creamery building in the Birch Street District
  • $30,000 to Oxford Mainstreet Inc. to support its strategic plan for Main Street designation

Delaware County

  • $500,000 to Liberty Housing Development Corporation to build “Eileen & Shawn's Place,” a six-unit residential property for low-income, disabled individuals who are transitioning from care in nursing homes

Montgomery County

  • $213,000 to the Colebrookdale Railroad Preservation Trust for the Pottstown Steel River Station safety, security, and connectivity project

Philadelphia County

  • $1 million to the City of Philadelphia for the 52nd Street commercial corridor improvement project to improve safety, transit service, and streetscape infrastructure on 52nd Street between Arch and Pine streets

Main Street Matters, administered by the Pennsylvania DCED, received more than 200 applications requesting over $43 million. Shapiro's 2025-2026 budget proposal includes another $20 million to support the Main Street Matters initiative.
