MGK Thursday Top 10 Countdown From October 13, 1986

• 10. 5150 - Van Halen

  Van Halen’s 5150 wasn’t only their first album with Sammy Hagar, it was also their first of four #1 albums! Amazing they never hit the top with Diamond Dave. after peaking at the top spot, on its way to selling more than 6 million copies, it hangs in at #10. Today (10/13) is Sammy’s Birthday!

• 9. Tuff Enuff - Fabulous Thunderbirds

  Stevie Ray’s older brother Jimmy Vaughan also had a hit with his band, The Fabulous Thunderbirds.  It was “Tuff Enuff,” the title track from this week’s #9 rock album.

• 8. Riptide - Robert Palmer

  Chaka Khan was supposed to sing with Robert Palmer on this track, but her record company intervened.  Despite that, she still did the vocal arrangement on “Addicted To Love.”  It’s from Riptide, the #8 rock album on October 13, 1986.

• 7. So - Peter Gabriel

  Peter Gabriel’s biggest album of his career was this, his fifth studio work called So.  It peaked at #2 over the summer of ’86 and was still firmly in the top 10 on October 13, 1986, at #7.

• 6. Night Songs - Cinderella

  It took just two weeks for this next album to go double platinum, or more than 2 million copies sold.  It was the debut by our favorite metal band from Clifton Heights, Cinderella. Night Songs is #6 on the countdown.

• 5. Invisible Touch - Genesis

  Genesis landed their one and only #1 single in the U.S. with this, the title track from the #5 rock album on MGK’s Thursday Top 10 Countdown, Invisible Touch.

• 4. Back In The Highlife - Steve Winwood

  Like the Genesis song above, this next song was the lone chart-topping single for Steve Winwood.  Featuring Chaka Khan, who we chatted about with album #8, this is “Higher Love” from Back In The Highlife, the #4 rock album on October 13, 1986.

• 3. The Bridge - Billy Joel

  Although Billy Joel has described The Bridge as “not a happy album” to make, it nevertheless gave him another top 10 chart appearance, peaking here at #3.  The opening track was “A Matter Of Trust.”

• 2. Slippery When Wet - Bon Jovi

  I still love that fact that, with some album covers costing thousands and thousands of dollars to set up, this next one must have run Bon Jovi about 20 bucks.  After their record company turned down the first attempt at the cover for Slippery When Wet, they basically wrote the words on a wet black trash bag and took the picture!  A picture that adorned 10 million copies of the album, which is #2 on this week’s countdown.

• 1. Fore! - Huey Lewis And The News

  Topping the chart this week is the fourth (“FORE!”) album by the bay area band Huey Lewis And The News.  The album was huge for them, generating three hit singles, selling over 3 million copies and hitting #1 for just one week.
