Cheers to Christine McVie
The music world lost a good one the other day as the iconic Christine McVie passed away on Wednesday, November 30th, of unknown causes.
The songwriter and keyboardist from the legendary band, Fleetwood Mac, was 79 years old.
Hearing this awful news brought a great deal of grief to the music world.
The news broke via her Instagram account with the official statement below:
“On behalf of Christine McVie’s family, it is with a heavy heart we are informing you of Christine’s death. She passed away peacefully at the hospital this morning, Wednesday, November 30th, 2022, following a short illness. She was in the company of her family. We kindly ask that you respect the family’s privacy at this extremely painful time, and we would like everyone to keep Christine in their hearts and remember the life of an incredible human being and revered musician who was loved universally. RIP Christine McVie.”
It is comforting to hear that she got to spend her final moments surrounded by family.
All of us in the music world will definitely see to the family’s wishes of keeping her in our hearts, and it will be quite easy to remember her as a revered musician.
Fleetwood Mac’s music has been the soundtrack for many of us during various points in our lives whether it be in happiness, sadness, or even celebration, and McVie was a huge part of that!
Former bandmates, Stevie Nicks and Mick Fleetwood, each posted heartfelt messages on Instagram reflecting on the news of McVie’s passing.
Nicks’ was actually a handwritten letter, which is definitely a nice touch.
Check them out below.
A post on the news that resonated with me the most actually came from my friend, Patrick Berkery, who many of you might know from his work on the drums for the band War on Drugs.
In a Facebook post, he wrote, “So saddened by the news of Christine McVie’s passing. Stevie may have been the star & Lindsey the architect, but Christine was the true heart & soul of the operation.”
Agreed, my friend. Agreed.
There is no better way to put it. It is short and sweet, but it rings so true.
My other good friend and WMGK’s own, Andre Gardner, broke the news on our station and did a fantastic job improvising his show by adding about 10 Fleetwood Mac songs as a tribute to McVie.
The older we get and the older many of our classic rock heroes get, we’ve all been a bit afraid of changing — even if time does, in fact, make us bolder — but what won’t change are the memories we’ve built around so many of their songs, and in this case, McVie’s in particular.
Cheers to a great life, Christine!
