Philadelphia Ranked A Top 5 Beer City In 2023 By USA Today
There are certain things Philadelphia does right. Sports fandom, restaurants, and brewing and drinking beers. Those are just 3 of a long list of Philadelphia positives. USA Today and its readers have taken notice of the beer scene in Philadelphia. On their annual list of Top 10 Beer Cities, our city whooped up on a bunch of other cities, making Philadelphia a top 5 beer city.
The list starts with Minneapolis, Minnesota in the 10 spot having 40+ breweries. Chicago and Tampa take the #8 & #7 positions, both having a really popular brewery that stands out. In Chicago, it’s the well-known Goose Island Brand and in Tampa, it’s Cigar City Brewing, whose IPA Jai Alai has exploded in popularity.
Let’s jump into the top 3 because that’s what matters. I was a bit surprised to see Indianapolis, Indiana at #3. For no other reason than I don’t think of it when I think of beer cities. According to the readers of USA Today they know that Indiana is more than just the Colts, Pacers, Hoosiers, and St. Elmo’s Steakhouse. They do good beer too.
The #2 spot that Philadelphia holds is due to a fantastic beer scene in this town and surrounding suburbs. Yard’s Victory, Evil Genius, Conshohocken Brewing. We’re claiming South Jersey beers too. They root for our sports teams so they count. Double Nickel, Flying Fish, and Tonewood Brewing all fit nicely into the Philadelphia beer scene. Many of the breweries in the area have cool setups that are welcoming to families. Another feather in Philadelphia’s cap is the number of great festivals these breweries put on. Until I saw this list from USA Today, I didn’t know that “Philly Beer Week is the oldest and biggest event of its kind.”
In celebration of Philadelphia being a top 5 beer city, raise a glass, bottle, or can from your favorite local brewery this weekend!
