Eric Johnson’s Favorite Rolling Stones Memories
I am so excited about the Rolling Stones tour coming to Philadelphia in 2024! Scroll down for more tour information.
Their career sort of coincides with my life! And yours too!
I was born in 1962 and their first hit in the UK was in 1963. It wasn’t until I was the ripe old age of 2 when 1964’s “Not Fade Away” put them on the charts and on the map in the US.
It wasn’t until the early 70s that I became a real fan enjoying all their songs from the 60s and the new stuff in the 70s. 1974’s “It’s Only Rock and Roll” became one of my favorite middle school albums. Then in high school “Some Girls” put my love of the Stones over the top as a fan! I mean come on, “Miss You”, “Beast Of Burden” and “Shattered”…some of the best classic rock ever made!
Then in my senior year of high school “Emotional Rescue”. I was 18 at the time and that was the legal drinking age in my native New Jersey. I remember going to the bars in Atlantic County and dancing to that one!
Then the summer of ’81 and the hype around the release of “Tattoo You” with its lead single “Start Me Up”. I remember waiting in line for the local mall record store to open to buy that album the day it became available.
At one point over the past 20 years or so, the 1968 hit “Jumpin’ Jack Flash” became my go-to karaoke song! I remember the first time I “performed it” was at a church fundraiser. I’m told I killed it, as after my performance I was asked to join the church choir.
I declined.
The next time I sang it publicly was at a family-oriented all-inclusive resort in Punta Cana in 2004. They invited parents up on stage to do karaoke and I naturally did “Jumpin’ Jack Flash”. It’s always fun for parents to playfully embarrass their kids. I think my elementary-aged kids at the time were horrified!
My modern-day memory is just from a few weeks ago when “Hackney Diamonds” was released, and then last week, being so happy they were nominated for a Grammy…60 after their UK chart debut!
Cheers to “The Rolling Stones”, we all thank you for a lifetime of memories!
