VIDEO: A Fogerty & ZZ Top Jam at MGK’s Heavy Hitter? It Sure Looks Like It
There’s absolutely nothing confirmed yet but after a recent interview with Rolling Stone in which ZZ Top’s Billy Gibbons told the magazine about some jamming he’s done with John Fogerty, we’re really hopeful tha the two acts will join each other on stage during MGK’s Heavy Hitter on 6/24 @ BB&T Pavilion.
During an interview with Rolling Stone magazine, Billy Gibbons discussed how a meeting to talk about the John Fogerty/ZZ Top summer tour turned into a jam session. Gibbons went to Fogerty’s LA home for the meeting and ended up moving the post meeting discussion to Fogerty’s home studio where a songwriting session started taking shape.
“We went straight to work,” Gibbons told Rolling Stone. “It was an exercise in just absolute joy.” The new material they created came together after they rocked out on “Fortunate Son,” “Bad Moon Rising” and “Tush” together.
“I’ve been wanting to kind of hook up with Billy or ZZ for a long time,” Fogerty mentioned. “I think we’ve traded emails. I ran into him down somewhere, and I was playing and Billy was playing the next night. I had him come into my show and we did ‘Sharp Dressed Man.’ It was a lot of fun. He sent me a couple of emails. I think he even gave me a CD or two that he labeled ‘Big Ol’ Blues.’ There was a whole bunch of great old songs on there. We’ve been trying for a while and it finally has fallen into place, which I’m delighted about.”
We’re still not sure which band will open and which band will close or how any potential on stage jam sessions will take place.
CCR’s former frontman has shown an interest in playing ZZ Top hits like “La Grange,” “Sleeping Bag” and “I’m Bad, I’m Nationwide,”. Gibbons is a fan of CCR’s “Fortunate Son” and “Down on the Corner”.
